foreign lang.

alright. i'm a junior going into my senior year. i'm looking at top schools, such as penn/swarthmore/uchi/etc. my stats arent the best, but i'm confident that i'll end up getting a fine education no matter what. anyway, one weakness in my transcript is my foreign languages. i'm credited with 2 years of french; however, the teacher did a horrible job at actually teaching us french. i ended up going to a new school after my soph year. this year (junior), i didnt take any foreign languages, as i didnt want to continue french since i didnt know the language that well. for my senior year i signed up for german I and possibly II (it will be credited as 2 years, those classes are on diff schedules). will this hinder my college applications? if so, what choice do i have?

i am looking to go to the middlebury/monterey summer language academy in arabic. the program is focused on simulated immersion in the culture (only arabic is spoken at all times). will this broad experience in language (french, arabic, and german) make up for my lack of concentration in one language?

yeah, I think your active interest in learning many new languages is a plus; some people enjoy diversity...I think you can definitely spin the situation in your favor.

haha arabic immersion? do you know any arabic? ;)

but if you're not convinced, go to your summer program in FRENCH immersion then take french 3 next year...

nah, i dont know arabic at all, but previous immersion isnt required. its at menlo college (its actually taught by middlebury/monterey institute of international studies teachers) in palo alto , not dubai :P.

but uhm, is not doing 4 (or 3) years of french a big blow to apps? does the active interest in other languages counteract that?

You should check the websites of the college you're interested in to see what they require or prefer as far as foreign languages in HS. Some, as shown in this thread, want 4 years of a single language:

In general, they would rather see you become proficient in one language than dabble in several.
