Foreign language a core class?

I was looking at the UNC Chapel Hill and NYU sites about transfer admissions. They mentioned that a student should have completed atleast 1 course in each of the 5 core areas of study... 1 of them being a foreign language?

Is this common? I've never heard of foreign language being a core class. These are both school I was really considering applying to, and it's worrying me. I have taken 3 years of spanish in high school, but none in college, and didn't plan on it either.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Call them and ask. "What are the 5 core areas that transfers need?"

May depend on your major. For example, some universities require students to take foreign language, but waive that for Engineering majors.
