Foreign Language and Admission.

Will my chances for admission be hurt if i don't take Spanish my senior year? I took spanish 3 years of my high school career, and I don't enjoy as much anymore. I am also taking 4 APs my senior year.

Steff, My son had decided not to take AP French his senior year, so no language his senior year. He wants to take an entirely new language in college. He did sign up for a number of AP classes and one college level course through Syracuse University. He opted not to take the traditional AP Science classes like AP Physics, Biology or Chemistry since he had already decided on a Political Science major. Instead he took AP Environmental Science. However, his classes were still rigorous and he did very well in them. Note that he also took AP Calculus BC (after taking AP Calc AB his junior year).

NYU apparently did not penalize him for not taking “traditional” classes or not continuing with advanced (AP) French since he was chosen for the MLK Scholarship (my estimate is that 40-80 students were selected for the scholarship out of 30,000+ applications; this is a scholarship you are selected for and not one you select yourself). So the point is: it is not what you take that is important but whatever you take in senior year should be rigorous and you should do well in them. The classes should also be consistent with your own interests.

Thank you so much evolving, for such a thorough and complete response. I, myself, am taking AP environmental science and AP Calc my senior year, with two other APs. I hope this is rigorous enough for NYU =/

Steff,

Your situation sounds very similar to my son’s for the senior year. Just make sure you do as well as you can. Also, make sure standardized scores can be as high as possible. Add in a dose of good ECs (hopefully continued from interests already demonstrated by senior year). Write a strong essay. Then, hopefully, you are good to go. I wish you the best in this coming year. It certainly is a challenging one.
