Foreign Language at Duke

whoa, that's awesome. thanks guys.

engineers dont get a free elective for one of the two semesters, do we? (because of writing 20)

Should I just skip MATH 107 fall semester to take intensive first year german (2 credits), or overload to take german 1 and 2 seperatly. I figure I won't be behind much because a lot of people will be taking 103 in the fall. The other variable may be study abroad in the summer, do you think I would forget it all?

Thanks again.

I'd say go for the separate german 1 and 2. I just had an engineering friend of mine who tried out the intensive german during drop/add and it was insane. The prof said to expect at least 3 1/2 hrs of hw a night. He quickly switched into German 1

Hmm...I wonder what the chances are of us getting slots in the language courses. I've been checking the enrollment capacities and the spots available, and most of them are at least half-way full...worries

question
I was born here in the U.S. My parents have come over from India. Now although they speak it fluently and I can understand them most of the time, I cannot speak or read/write Hindi. Would it be ok if I took hindi as a foreign language?

DualAnya, you can look at it that way...or you can look at it as, 3/4 of the school has already registered and the classes are still ONLY halfway full. That's how I'd look at it, at least.

mathgeek - Yes you can take it. You should, however, email the department concerning placement, although I'm pretty sure you will be allowed to take Hindi 1.

Aww, thanks bandcampgirl...you made me feel a bit better! I actually hadn't even considered that....blushes Thanks!

The language departments are probably the most willing to open new sections of intro/intermediate courses for an overflow of students. As long as you're not shooting for a 100-level class, I wouldn't worry about getting in.

This is definitely true. The thing about language profs (in general) is that, SURPRISE!, they really like the language they teach. The more people that speak it, the more they see themselves as fulfilling their mission (see: the entire Chinese department). So, what this means for you is that unless you are trying to get into some high-level course, they love to have you taking their language. All you have to do is email them.

And another note: Don't be afraid to email a professor! They are usually very very nice people! Just be courteous (sir/m'am/professor) and concise. Don't send them a 5 page email about how you can't figure out ACES.

i'm not sure if this has been asked before; but, i understand that freshmen cannot sign up for classes that have a waitlist. One foreign language class I want to sign up for has one; I have heard that if I email the professor, they may make room. Should I email them right now? If not, my schedule would look completely different than what I want it to be. How does the whole thing work? How would I sign up for the class if he/she approves the extra room?

Thanks

You can try emailing them; however, if it's just a time issue, they may not let you in. One of the facts of life about being a first-semester freshman is that sometimes you get stuck with crappy class times. That being said, if you do get permission from the prof, they will give you this code (usually a 3-4 number code) and it will ask you to input it when you try to register. If i had to guess, I'd say you'll probably end up with your "completely different" schedule.

does anyone know how hard the placement test is? I signed up for adv spanish 101 and don't know how fresh my spanish will be at the end of the summer. can you place in by your SAT II score? if so, does anyone know what the score necessary is or how to find out

<a href="http://www.duke.edu/web/spanish/placement.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.duke.edu/web/spanish/placement.html</a></p>

nice! thanks

sweetraspberry99-- so glad to see another freshman taking 101. I've been feeling a little nervous.

pri430 and sweetraspberry99, I'm thinking about taking 101, but I'm not sure if I want to minor in Spanish. I really don't want a friday afternoon class and like my schedule as is (if it happens...), so 104 is in my bookbag.

How is Adv Spanish grammar 104? Easier than 101? I love grammar, but I also want to improve my writing.

i'll be a freshman...and i really want to take Span 101, but scheduling conflicts w/ other classes prevent me from taking it...so I may have to put it off until spring semester! (there's no way i'll still remember spanish then :( )

i haven't taken spanish since junior year of hs, but my sat II score places me into 76. should i drop down to 63 so it will be easier to refresh or should i go ahead and take 76?

I had the same issue with French; they advised me to take 76, since I could always drop down to 63 if I found it too hard.
