If I took four years of a foreign language in high school, and I don't wish to continue it, do I still have to take a placement test at Penn?

What if I want to just start a different foreign language at Penn, starting from the beginning(intro courses)?

It is fine to start one from the beginning. If you don't want to take what you took in high school you don't need to take the placement test. You might want to though if you can possibly be exempt from the lang requirement. That way you can start a new language, but if you end up not liking it you can just stop because the requirement is already fulfilled.

You can test out, but I'd advise taking something new like Chinese or Japanese if you haven't already. The departments here for those languages are awesome.

Is the top(highest, hardest) Spanish class really difficult? Approx. what % of students get A's, B's, etc?

is it mostly written assignments or oral exams? and is homework common/graded?

thx in advance

just find the syllabus for it...

preMedguy - I assume you're talking about Spanish 140.
not sure about percentages for grades. In my experience, it's relatively easy to maintain an A- or a B+, and very difficult to make the jump from an A- to an A.

There is one oral exam at the end of the semester worth 10%, a few one-page essays (some to be written at home, some in class) and daily homework (often checked to see if it's completed but not graded otherwise). Chapter tests are predominantly grammar-based, and, as I suppose would be expected, get progressively harder.

Since all assignments are the same across sections, there's a bit of luck involved. If you're teacher's good, the class shouldn't be a huge deal; otherwise, prepare to do a lot of learning on your own.

LadyinRed, so if the teacher checks to see if the homework is "completed," does that mean he gives credit as long as it's done?

or are no points awarded for homework at all?

do you have to take a foreign language at Penn? can we test out of it?

yeah you can. they have tests for that the beginning of each schoool year

college kids have foreing lang req. i think wharton kids do too

Chinese and Korean depts are awesome here. Penn pwns when it comes to Asian studies ;)

premedguy - if it's done, you get credit

When is the deadline for the Penn online placement exam (for spanish?)

yes, follow the trail of small asian mammals to the testing. they never lead your astray

Whoa, since when are Asians classified as mammals? don't they come from eggs or hives or something?

johnny, get off this forum and go seduce chinese women with your passport.
