I am interested in applying to Penn for Fall 2013 ( I know that's al ong time from now but it never hurts to start researching early). I would major in History and minor in International Relations but I am most interested in learning another language. I take French and have great success with it but I need to develop an accent lol. I am leaning towards Mandarin, Arabic, or Russian.

How are the programs for the languages listed above?
Can/Are students allowed to take two languages?

I have a friend who goes to Penn and he says that the language program is extraordinary. For example, if you wanted to study Tagalog (which I’m sure they offer now–just using it as an example) and got three or so other interested students, Penn would provide a professor. I hear it is one of the best. And yes, I’m sure you’re allowed to take two especially if you minor in one.

However, if you plan to use one or both as potential job credentials you’re going to want to go well beyond the basics. Be sure to take a composition course or two as well. That may introduce some interesting workload issues late in your degree program but it’s doable.

In a perfect world you would also include a summer abroad where one of your languages is spoken.

I want to be an attorney practicing international and media law. And of course I will complete a summer abroad. If I get into Penn, I will elect to fulfill the History major requirment studying abroad in Egypt, Morocco, Jordan, China, England or anywhere during a semester.

haha good luck in getting into penn!! but anyways, i recommend taking mandarin I’m asian (chinese) and my mom is great friends with the chinese teacher. im not sure how many there are (sorry im still in high school) but i know that shes a great teacher and she runs a chinese school on sundays. So i recommend taking mandarin good luck!!

Hahaha, this is college, you can do whatever you want as long as you graduate. So yeah, if you wanted to, your entire fall schedule could be Spanish, French, Italian, and German if you wanted to just study languages all day long.

History is one of the most popular majors in the College of Arts and Sciences. The professors rock, and there are a trillion interesting options. A good friend of mine majored in IR and thought it was a great program.
