foreign language classes

Hi..

How are the foreign language classes like at this school? How many hours of homework should I expect?

Do beginner language classes expect students to have high school knowledge of the language they're taking?

Just any information about the classes would be great.

Thanks^^

I tested out of the beginner levels, and I haven’t taken a lot of foreign language classes yet, so I’m not sure how useful this will be, but I don’t think beginner classes would expect any prior knowledge of the language. If you’ve already studied the language, you can take the Measurement and Research Services tests http://mars.tamu.edu/testingsite/HTMLfiles/dept.htm#MOCL</a> . You can get up to 4 semesters of credit, and I believe you pay $50 for each class you get to skip.

I enjoyed my French 301 course, but another student thought it was more difficult than other French classes she had taken at A&M, so she dropped it. As that’s the only French class I’ve taken, I can’t compare the level of difficulty to other classes. We had a reading in French to do between once and twice a week, and it took about 30-45 minutes without looking up unfamiliar vocab. We also filled out worksheets a couple of times and wrote a one page paper.

How was the French placement test?

It looks like I’ll be taking the Spanish one …

Sorry, I don’t remember too much. I asked this question here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/texas-m-university/969157-foreign-language-placement-testing.html</a> so you might find aggiemom2011’s reply useful. I didn’t think it was too difficult, and I got credit for all four semesters. I think I reviewed some common conjugations and word placement, but I’m not sure I even needed to use that. I believe there were two parts: answering multiple choice questions and listening to some short excerpts and answering multiple choice questions about them.
