Foreign Language Course Question

I'm not sure if I understand this properly, so can someone explain?

Do you HAVE to take a foreign language course as an undergraduate? I took three years of a foreign language in high school and have: a. forgotten a lot of it; b. didn't like the language I chose.
If you do have to take one, how long is the minimum requirement? And can you choose a different language without much trouble?

Thanks.

You have to take 3 quarters if you're not in Business or Engineering.

if you're applying for a major in the arts & sciences school, or other various schools, you need it. some schools like business dont require it though. here is the page that indicates whether you need it or not:

UW Advising - General Education Requirements of UW's Schools & Colleges

look under the "foreign language" tab

hope that helps

Thanks for the info!

Is it easy to start fresh and take another foreign language?
Or would you recommend sticking to the one I have a slight foundation in? Are there placement tests? If there are... I'm bound to do bad :[

there are placements tests for all the language i believe... some are held more frequently than others though

i would try to do some research on the courses and professors before choosing a new language, and choose the one you feel comfortable with.

if you don't feel confident in the language you took in high school, you could try a new one as there are dozens to choose from.

Ok thanks again! Much appreciated.
