So I want to go to MIT, but I'm not sure what I should do about my schedule next year. I've taken three years of Japanese, but I absolutely hate it and do not want to take AP Japanese next year. But I'm concerned that it might look bad if I suddenly stopped short of the final Japanese class. And I would also think that MIT would value four years of a foreign language, even if all they ask for is 2. Should I take AP Japanese or should I take something like ap enviro instead? Any thoughts?

I’m pretty sure MIT cares less about foreign languages than most other selective colleges so taking another AP science instead of AP Japanese is unlikely to hurt your application.

MIT is really fine with two credits of foreign language, but other top schools may not be. It’s worth checking into the requirements for any schools to which you plan to apply.

OP,

My son was admitted to MIT, Princeton, Caltech, Penn, and some other schools with only two semesters of college Arabic. He’d planned on taking a third semester but the class was impacted and he couldn’t get in.

I think if you’re strong in other areas, three years of a foreign language for any school is fine. Many schools “recommended” but don’t require 4 years.
