I applied to UF this past Summer. I received a letter in the mail saying they could not complete my application because I have not sent them Foreign Language credits. I called the man who sent the letter because I have an email from the head of the online Criminology and Law program saying I do not need Foreign Language for this program. I have never taken any. The man told me It is a law to have the credits to get into UF. I emailed the head of the program and he said he would look into it, its been about 2 weeks and suddenly my online account says my application has been sent to my college for review. I have no idea what is going on and now I cant seem to reach anyone.

Are you an out of state student? Just wondering because I believe you are required to have two years of high school level foreign language to graduate high school here in Florida. Maybe that’s what they’re referring to?

I graduated highschool in Michigan but graduate with my AA from Florida.

graduated*

even if your major does not require a language, you needed to take one in high school. Because you didn’t you should have taken it in CC.

Yes, I agree with the above poster. If you didn’t have it in high school (which is required for graduation in Florida) you should have taken it at the CC. I actually don’t understand how you got your AA without it. At our CC you had to meet that requirement to even get your AA. And I’m guessing that what the head of the criminology department meant was that it wasn’t a requirement for the degree you were applying for at UF. Meaning you didn’t need College Level foreign language for the degree you’re applying for NOT that you didn’t need it all. This sounds confusing doesn’t it? OK, bottom line, you’re supposed to have at least two years of foreign language from high school which fulfills your graduation requirement from high school and allows you to apply to UF but doesn’t fulfill the college level foreign language that may be required for your undergraduate degree. OR you could take the foreign language at CC which would fulfill both - the high school requirement AND the college level undergraduate requirement IF your degree required it. It sounds like your undergraduate degree doesn’t call for the foreign language but that doesn’t exclude the basic high school requirement. I have to say I’m really surprised that no guidance counselor (either in high school or at the cc) advised you that you would need this. You are probably going to have wait a year…fulfill the requirement and reapply. I wish you the best of luck. :)

Thank you for the detailed explanation. I wish someone would have told me. I had no idea because it is not a requirement in Michigan. I wonder how I am to the point of my app being sent to my college for further review though. How could I make it past that point? I finally heard back from the Criminology Department, he said they are meeting next Monday and will know more after. Thanks for your help everyone!

I’m hoping that for you maybe there is an exception because you went to high school out of state? I hope that is for the case for you. Keep us posted and let us know! Good luck :)

I hope so too! I was just saying the same thing to my mom. If they are sending it to my college for review that could be a good thing but I am trying not to get my hopes up. Ill keep you posted :)

I received a small update today for the college. I spoke with a girl on the phone, she said I was denied but the decision was then reversed but she didnt know why. She said she was going to take my file to the advising office immediately. As far as I can tell, they updated my file but still have not given me a decision. I am so anxious!

I remember a portion of the app saying something along the lines of meeting the two years of foreign language requirement…but maybe that’s only for the undergrad app.

Hope everything works out!

I just wanted to update! I got in!! I just found out. I actually gave up and registered at another college, I also accepted the financial aid package and loans at another school so I hope I can get out of it and transfer it over to UF. I waited so long I did not know what else to do. I received an email about a crime alert to UF students, I thought, why am I getting this email…I logged in and there it was. I was accepted. I am shocked and so happy, just hope the finance part works out now!!!
