Foreign Language Departments

wittywonka-
Does Pomona really have a foreign languages general major? I haven’t come across it. It seems the only of the Claremont colleges to offer Italian is Pitzer, a women’s college I’m not sure males can take classes at. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

I’m looking for liberal arts colleges that offer Japanese, Italian, and a Foreign Language and Literature general major.

Pitzer is co-ed. Scripps is the only single-sex Claremont college, and I believe male students in the consortium can take classes there.

Ooops - sorry my bad. Disregard the info.

Oh. I meant Scripps. That’s fantastic if I could take Italian there. Thanks. I’m not sure the Claremont colleges are my preferred institutions, but I’ve more searching to do.

People have mentioned languages at Pitzer, Pomona, Scripps, and Claremont McKenna. it is a mistake to talk about the schools separately, since all Claremont students take classes at all Claremont colleges. For example, you can take French at Scripps, Pomona, or CMC, whatever fits best into your schedule. In any particular class there is a good chance that there will be students from all of the five colleges. So, when looking at languages consider the Claremont colleges as a whole.

So there’s an example where the whole is less than the sum of its parts. Scripps has exactly two professors in Italian (one the renowned Sara Adler), and a lecturer. There are none at ANY of the other Claremont colleges, so all the students at the other colleges would be vying for spots at Scripps. What happens the year Prof. Adler goes on sabbatical? Or the Assistant Professor doesn’t get tenure (or takes leave to write her book?)

Now compare that to the Italian Departments at Wellesley, Middlebury, or Smith. (On the flip side, see what you’d find at Williams.)

University of Arkansas at Fayetteville offers Arabic, Chinese, classics (Greek & Latin), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, and Swahili. Great school, too.

Oberlin has excellent Chinese language and Asian Studies.

Holy ancient posts, batman!
