In the prerequisites for applying to McIntire it lists a foreign language as one of the prerequisites. I read somewhere on there site that you need to have at least 2 years of a language other than english in high school. Do I have to take a year of foreign language at UVA if I already have 3 years of Chinese in HS?

Also at the bottom it says, "The English composition requirement (ENWR 110) and the foreign language requirement are waived for students exempted by other schools at the University." Would the school of engineering have an exemption for not taking foreign languages?

in the college you have to take the foreign language unless you place out of it via UVa's placement test, SATII score (i believe), or AP credit.

If you are in the E-school you wouldn't have to take the foreign language requirement or ENWR; however, i believe its pretty hard to fulfill all the pre-comm requirements out of e-school in 4 semesters.

The comm school has a foreign language requirement regardless of what school the applicant is transferring is from (also Echol scholars are not exempt).

THe link that you gave strongly recommends taking Sat II but I have already signed up for the AP test and I hope to get some credit from tehre. Plus, my teacher recommended taking the AP since AP gives you credits and placement while SATII only places you in a higher class. True? So, basically should I take the SatII or just go with the AP test...I really don't want to see another Sat booklet in my life!

BGjeez thats correct about getting credit for the AP test and only placement from the SAT II. But both can get you exempt from the Language requirement. If you're planning on continuing your study of language in college than it doesn't really matter. Just take the AP test.

But if you'd really like to never take language again, I would take both.
Give yourself as many chances to get out of the language requirement as possible! Having to take four more semester of language is a much bigger deal than having to get up early one Saturday in June. I think its easier to get out of the requirement taking the Sat IIs, and you could just have a bad test day when you take the AP.

Thanks holla9! At this point, I don't think I will continue with a language in college. How many do really do that? I am currently taking spanish and plan to graduate from McIntire, work, and then go for the MBA. Doesn't sound really necessary does it?
