I am from hong kong, and have studied chinese for pretty much all my life. So for the foreign language class i have to take in the school i am going to attend, i decided to choose chinese. But after taking the placement test they said that i was too 'advanced to be placed in a class' and i could either join a class they called 'advanced chinese reading' or start a new language. I am not sure whether i should complete the advanced chinese reading course and take my AP, and spend the last 3 years taking a new language, or whether i should just start a new language from scratch, and if i do i am not sure whether i should take spanish or latin/greek. I am trying to keep in mind that a lot of the ivy league have a 4 year foreign language requirement. so if i do one year of chinese and 3 years or another language, will i still be able to say that i have studied 4 years or chinese since i have studied it in my previous school?

I think you would be able to say you studied 3 years. For example if I took Spanish, German, French, and Italian but only beginner courses, no way would they say I have taken 4 years of a foreign language.
And also I would recommend taking another foreign language… By the fourth year you should be pretty set in terms of comprehension and be able to use it fairly well, almost to a basic fluency level (assuming your teachers don’t suck and you use it outside of class)… So would you rather be some “advanced Chinese reader” or trilingual in Spanish, English, and Chinese?

I think you should start a new language. Take the chinese AP test but not the class. this proves your proficiency. the ivy league doesn’t (or at least harvard doesn’t) have requirements - they’re just suggestions on what to take.

AP Chinese is a joke.

Even though i am a chinese who lived in china for only 11 years.

But I moved to argentina after that and have a fluent English and Spanish . man, it was very HARD! And also very good level French 3 years now.

So i am quad-lingual right now:)

i say start spanish or french, and work hard on it.

start a new language
