I'm hoping to double-major in Spanish (which I have moderate proficiency in already) and Chinese. Can anyone tell me anything about Berkeley's foreign language programs? How does it compare to the programs at places like Middlebury College and American University? I realize Berkeley is a well-renowned school overall, but how renowned is its language program individually?

In the U.S., UC Berkeley is ranked 4th right after Harvard, Yale, and Princeton.

The Spanish major requires a five semester lower division sequence (though if you have moderate proficiency, you will likely start somewhere other than the first course based on department placement guidelines) and ten upper division courses to be taken after you complete the lower division sequence.

The Chinese major requires a six semester language sequence (four semesters for the heritage speaker versions of the courses; students may be placed into intermediate or advanced courses by placement test) and eight other courses, but many of the courses do not require completion of the language sequence.
