Foreign Language Placement Exams

Hi,

I am entering Tufts as a freshman this fall. I am Korean-American, and speak Korean fluently. I'm wondering if anyone knows how I can take a Korean exam or do something for Korean to place out of some of the foreign language requirement at Tufts.

I've talked to all sorts of people at Tufts including people at the orientation office, dean's office, and foriegn language department, and they all either seem to give me different answers or tell me they can't help me. >.<

So far I've been told that there is in fact a test, and that I would be contacted soon by phone or email, but I haven't gotten anything and it's been two weeks.

Can you guys help me out?

not quite sure about this one.. as tufts really doesn't have a korean program.. do you take any other foreign languages?

tufts does place a strong emphasis on foreign language.. with a 6 semester requirement (although you can opt to take 3 foreign culture courses after the 3 mandatory language courses).. IR majors are bound to 8 semesters of foreign language (and i think.. not sure since im not an IR major.. you have to get through the 121/122 level aka advanced language levels for the major).. engineering students get out of the language requirement (if that applies to you)

just fyi.. the language program structure is something like this

1/2 intro
3/4 intermediate
21/22 composition and conversation
121/122 advanced language
with a variety of literature and culture courses offered in between

i would generally recommend taking a foreign language if you're a lib arts student.. its a great opportunity to learn a language you would've otherwise never considered.. also i assure you you'll have the support of your friends in the exotic languages as Arabic, Japanese, and Chinese were recently named most popular freshman languages.. i was sort of in your position.. i speak chinese fluently.. never took the chinese exam but i placed out of the requirement with french.. i decided to continue french for one semester and since than have started japanese.. im also getting private lessons (easy to arrange) in hebrew..

sorry couldnt have been more of a help with your specific problem.. but hopefully you learned a little more about our foreign language program?
