Foreign language placement test

Does anyone know if the placement test you take has to be in the language you want to study? For example, I've taken two years of Spanish in high school but will not be taking it if at all possible at iu. However, I do want to study Japanese, which I have never taken a class in and have minimal familiarity with. Which one would I take the placement test in? Any help would be appreciated.

CAS has foreign language requirements for 3-4 semesters. The purpose of the placement test is to assess which level to place you so that your previous effort can be accounted for. If you take Spanish, you may get some credits depending upon your skill. If you had little exposure to Japanese, you probably won’t get any credits and you will have to start from Japanese I.

But if i do take the Spanish one, does that mean that I must take Spanish for my foreign language? Honestly, I feel like I learned little to nothing in my two years in Spanish anyway, and I lack any desire to further pursue it.

By the way I noticed you said cas has that requirement…actually I’m in kelley. Does that make a difference regarding how much I must take?

It sounds like you probably won’t get any credit for Spanish. You will still be able to take whatever language you want regardless of which test you take. Since you’re starting from Japanese one, and you’re not going to get any credit from Spanish, your placement test will basically be useless.

And you don’t need to worry about the CAS requirements if you’re in Kelley. You don’t even have to take a language if you’re in Kelley.

If you took your two years of Spanish recently, then you should just go ahead and do the placement test. It only takes about an hour. You have nothing to lose. You might come out of the test with four free credit hours. You are not obligated to take any more Spanish classes, regardless of how you do on the placement test. If you do take the test, focus on Spanish grammar, as that is what is stressed the most on the test.

A few years ago, IU used the Spanish language placement test developed by the University of Wisconsin. I don’t know if they still use it, though.

Thanks all for your help. I will definitely be taking the Spanish placement test then.
