Foreign Language Placement

If I pass the online exam, do I earn the credit automatically and don't have to take 2 years of language? (I think it's 2 years...) Or am I just qualified to take higher level courses....but still need to do 2 years of language?

Thanks in advance.

bumpppppppppp

not sure, but i think you have to then take higher-level courses. the site says: "If you take a Northwestern foreign language placement exam and are officially placed in a given level of a foreign language, you may not earn credit for a lower-level course in that language."

related questions: when are we "supposed" to take the online exams? can we take them more than once? what happens if we miss the deadline ("before arriving on campus")? ...how does the whole thing work??

well all I read was that sometime during the summer, the placement tests are up. I know that the languages are up because I checked. But the earlier you take them, the better....apparently according to the site. This is assuming you are prepared.

I am not prepared. But I don't want to chance having to take Spanish 2 if I don't do well enough to get it all over with altogether because then I will have to take Spanish 3.

However, the site also says that we only need to pass the 3rd quarter of the 2nd year of a language to fulfillt the language requirement....soooo what to do?

What to do: I will call NU on Monday and update this with info.

does anyone know how the foreign language requirement works for international students? can they skip it if english is not their first language?

here is the deal: if you place into spanish 1 (for example) you take 2 years (spanish 1 and 2) unless you do accelerated.

if you place into spanish 2, you do one year (spanish 2).

if you place out of the requirement completely (meaning you ace the test), you aren't required to take any foreign language.

there you go!

LILYBLOOM: Thanks for that reply. I just called them 10 minutes ago and the advising office said the same thing so this is confirmed.

INTERNATIONAL: If English is not your first language and not on their list, you can do a petition for proficiency at their offices. More information can be found online.

I hope that helped :)

whoa did you all get mail or email or something about this? i havent gotten anything.

does anyone know how long it takes for them to grade the placement exams?

what??? placement exams online?? since when?? have they mailed something out about this?

i'd go to the language department's official page and check to see if they mention when they will be graded:
<a href="http://www.cli.northwestern.edu/info_students/cas_languages.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.cli.northwestern.edu/info_students/cas_languages.html</a></p>

for latin, it says, "If you take the placement exam before September 15, you will receive your results before New Student Week." that's obviously a little outdated.. but hey, at least they'll be speedy about it.

scratch that previous comment; the following link specifies for probably most of the languages:
<a href="http://www.northwestern.edu/newstudentweek/before/placementexams.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.northwestern.edu/newstudentweek/before/placementexams.html</a></p>

I read online that if you take the test you either place into accelerated spanish 1 (2 qtrs instead of 3 for hte first year), spanish 2 (3 quarters and then you're done), or spanish 2 and you only do the last quarter.
I also saw that spanish testing isnt available until august 15th. Can anyone confirm that? I'm afraid to go any further bc I don't want to accidnetally start the test because I'm grossly unprepared.

does anyone know if transfer students have to take foreign language placement exams, even if you already got assigned credit for the foreign language classes you took at your previous university? I'm not taking the language next quarter so it didnt come up when I made my schedule, but I might want to take it up again later on, and I don't want to have messed up by not taking it or whatever.

Not about language tests per se, but placement tests in general.

I took chem (obviously) in high school, but have no intention of continuing it, as it sucked my soul out of my body.

Do I still have to take the test?

ok...so if you got a 5 on AP French Language, does that satisfy the req?

yeah it does...northwestern.edu/newstudentweek has all the info about waht does waht and such under placement exams...i took an exam last week btw it was graded and i received an email from the woman in charge of that placement exam the same day w/ suggested courses

is the spanish and portuguese major a joint major? do you have to do both?
