So i just took the foreign language test. Scored a 417. or the third semester of language.

Do I have to take spanish when i get to college? or can i opt to take 3 semesters of another language instead of the 1 required of spanish?

Also lets say i don't take any spanish classes until my junior year-- can i opt to take a lower level spanish course? because I would not have taken a spanish course in 3 years, hence rusty.

I don’t know if you can take the lower-level Spanish course, but I think you probably can. And YES, you can choose to take three semsters of a different language if you want.

A sensible plan might be to take the third semester of Spanish NOW to get that requirement checked off so you don’t have to worry about it. Then you can always take another language as you go along and are able to squeeze it in your schedule. If you wait and have to take extra semesters of Spanish to re-learn what you already know or have to take all three semesters of another language to fulfill the requirement, you might find you don’t have room in your schedule for a minor you might be interested in.

Another option:
-Take third semester Spanish next summer at a community college (with USC pre-approval) to get the requirement out of the way.

When I took French 2, one girl who was there actually sorta did that. She audited the class (with approval from our professor) so that she’d be prepared for French 3 (since she was a senior).

However, if you feel confident about your Spanish skills, you could request to take the written exam before school starts and that can exempt you from the language requirement (if you pass into Spanish 4 or higher).

And as alamemom mentioned, you can do another language, but you’d have to start from the beginning (or wherever you’d be placed into based on the language placement exam for that language).
