Scenario:
Entering Senior Yr:
GPA 3.49 Unweighted
3.8 Weighted
*Only 2APs thus far
*Currently Registered for 2 Additional APs & H CompSci Independent Study

Currently only has 2yrs FL but, can take the 3rd, now. Would rather not. Would it be better to take 3APs and omit the 3rd yr FL (and get a higher GPA) or, take the 3rd yr FL. How would each of the schools view the 2/3yr FL & GPA? Please assume two scenarios: SAT is 2050 & 2150. Thanks!

I personally went through the same dilemma at my boarding school. For my junior year added in an extra class to make sure I could finish all the AP sciences by senior year, but I would then be missing the recommended foreign language, which would be Latin III for me. Talking to my college adviser she told me that taking an AP would be better if you really wanted it and it would be even more justified if it was related to your intended major. Also, I’m pretty sure how advance you are in the class could justify it. Say if your next level language class AP Spanish or Spanish 4, then it would probably be fine because they know your already committed four plus years (or your really good at the language).

Yes. I think my son only has a chance at UCSB or CPSLO. So, he will go ahead and take 3 APs this year and the H Comp Sci Indep.Study. Thanks for the input!

Talk to your GC to see if replacing the 3rd AP with FL would make him/her considered it as less rigor level. If it does not make mark difference, I would prefer having the 3rd year FL to fulfill the “preferred” requirement which may have a larger impact than having one more AP course.

Cal Poly SLO will give applicants more bonus points for an extra year of Math or Science rather than for Foreign Language. He should take AP’s in those 2 areas instead of the extra year of FL.

^ I see bonus point for Foreign Language on your link (100pt for 4 extra semester), while more bonus for advanced math (500pt for 4 semester) or lab science (200pt for 4 semester). Not sure if that can be prorated.
