Foreign Language requirement for Eng. majors...

Hi all,
I am applying as a transfer student (to start in 2014 at UCLA) and am confused regarding the foreign language requirement for English majors. I am pursuing option #2 at my community college (Santa Monica College), which states that I must complete:

"2nd semester of one foreign language and two additional courses in foreign
language or foreign literature, foreign literature in translation."

So, if I take the 1st semester of Italian, the 2nd semester of Italian, and one additional lit. in translation course, will I have completed the requirement? The (very confused) counselor at my school said that I must take Ital. 1 & 2 AND two additional courses (4 courses total).

If this were the case, why wouldn't the agreement state to take one full year of a foreign language?

Does taking Ital. 1, Ital. 2, and one additional course fulfill the requirement?

It sounds to me like your counselors are correct. It likely doesn’t say a full year of FL because many students place out of the 1st semester. Consult with UCLA if doubts persist.
