Foreign Language Requirement for Haas School of Business- Transfer Student

In high school I completed Spanish 1 and Spanish 2.

I’m wondering what is the foreign language requirement for a California Community College transfer? I hope that Spanish 2 is good enough, because I haven’t taken Spanish in like 3 years or so and I would have to retake the whole series if i needed more…

Thanks!

Is second semester foreign language at Berkeley equivalent in completing Spanish 2 or Spanish 3? Thanks.

@ucbalumnus

Use http://www.assist.org to see what course at your CC is equivalent to the second semester of Spanish at Berkeley.

For example:

http://www.assist.org/web-assist/report.do?agreement=aa&reportPath=REPORT_2&reportScript=Rep2.pl&event=18&swap=0&dir=2&sia=LANEY&ria=UCB&ia=UCB&oia=LANEY&aay=15-16&ay=15-16&dora=SPANISH says that Laney College Spanish 1B = UCB Spanish 2.

http://www.assist.org/web-assist/report.do?agreement=aa&reportPath=REPORT_2&reportScript=Rep2.pl&event=18&swap=0&dir=2&sia=DIABLO&ria=UCB&ia=UCB&oia=DIABLO&aay=15-16&ay=15-16&dora=SPANISH says that Diablo Valley College Spanish 121 = UCB Spanish 2.

You may have to take a placement test at your CC to determine which level of Spanish course you can start in.

You need the equiv of three years of high school language for Haas (two years college).

@lindyk8 I thought it was 2 semesters in college?

@goldencub, ah yeah, good catch. I said it awkwardly. It’s so confusingly set up. It IS two college semesters (equivalent to Berkeley’s), which is the same as two college years – or three high school years.

IGETC’s requirement is one college semester (equivalent to a UC’s), which is the same as one college year – or two high school years.

Actually, second semester college is the same as one year college starting from the beginner course.

^^^ I’m not sure what you said, but I think I agree.

For high school, you need THREE years.

You can always brush up on Spanish and then test into the second semester of college Spanish and pass it … and be done. Or try to brush up on it and just test through it all and not take any.

For college, you need two semesters, but that varies slightly from one CCC to another, so you need to double check with assist. For example, I’m taking American Sign Language at CCSF. I can take 1A and 1B and complete the requirement, even though that is just one semester’s worth of a language divided into two semesters (at 3 credits each), but it fulfills the requirement. The AMSL track at Napa Valley College though is AMSL 1 and AMSL 2, both at 5 credits each.

So you really need to check assist in terms of what can fulfill it at the CCC level … but regardless, your 2 years at high school will do you no good. I took 2 years of German in high school and am in the same position.
