foreign language requirement question

Is taking a foreign language required at Vanderbilt?

I know that as part of the AXLE requirements, I need to take 3 courses in international cultures and the booklet I received says that at least 1 of these courses must be a second-semester language acquisition class unless the student demonstrates proficiency in the language. Proficiency can be determined by SAT subject scores, AP scores, or department placement tests. I took the Spanish placement test and received ~420 on it, and I needed a 365 to demonstrate that I was proficient in Spanish.

Does this mean that I do not have to take a language, and can take 3 other courses to fulfill the international cultures requirement?

Yes, pretty much. For that placement test to count for credit, though, you’ll have to take it again when you get to school with a proctor. It was administered during CommonVU orientation last year; just look over the schedule and talk to your advisor!
