Hi,
I’m enrolling in community college in August, and I will have 30 units of AP credit and an additional 6 units from college classes. So, my ultimate goal is to transfer to Berkeley or UCLA in one year. I’ve already figured out my classes for the next year and I will be completing all the IGETC requirements as well as all the pre-requisite courses for Berkeley’s political economy major and UCLA’s global studies major. However, both schools list that four semesters of a foreign language are a pre-requisite, but don’t mention that they are absolutely mandatory to transfer. I will have finished only two semesters of college French by the end of spring semester, so I’m wondering if that will in any way affect my chances of admission, or if I can just complete the two semesters (or quarter equivalent) at the schools if I am accepted. I have read that you must take as many semesters possible before transferring, so two would be accepted. I just want to confirm- I would hate to stay an extra year just because of two semesters!!
The wording on the ASSIST pages seems to indicate that any remaining foreign language can be completed after transfer. You can ask the departments if you are not sure.

Even though colleges may say they just require 2 years, most want you to take 3 or 4 years in order to be a serious candidate for admissions. If you just take 2 years you will be in a huge disadvantage.
I got in as a transfer student and had no foreign language listed on my app. All I put was “satisfied IGETC requirement” from 2 years of a high school language. By the way, I got into both UCLA and Berkeley for Econ. Don’t stress about the foreign language requirement, just satisfy all IGETC requirements and your fine.
The OP of this thread was looking at a major that specifically has a higher foreign language requirement than the school/division has.
