I'm having a bit of a panic because of Cornell's requirement of 3 years of a foreign language. I have taken two courses in French but my high school does not offer anything higher. Florida Virtual School does not have the class and the best I can find at the community college is Elementary French 1.. If I took that would the admissions council consider it as a third year? I doubt that they will and I don't see any options. Is this a cut and dry requirement or is there a way I can convey to them that I don't have any option?

I would ask admissions. They don’t usually penalize students based on what their high school offers. I would take a semester or two of French at your community college if at all possible just because it indicates your initiative to pursue education, especially in an area where your high school is lacking. Plus, most good schools require 3 years of foreign language (I believe) so it can only benefit you to continue your French elsewhere. I would also talk to your guidance counselor since I’m guessing he/she runs across this issue with students from your school frequently.
