Foreign Language requirement

Hello I got into Stony Brook and will be majoring in physics. My biggest weakness in High School was foreign language, the language I took was Italian and I failed once in it. I want to know how hard is it to pass the foreign language requirement at Stony brook. I was thinking of this time taking Spanish 112 to fulfill the requirement.

Thanks

Likely the same level of difficulty you encountered in high school.

At Stony can I devote an entire semester to just passing the requirement. Like only take one class

Not if you want to drop below the full-time requirement (and forfeit certain services such as housing) and delay your graduation.

I was told that if you are a NYS resident, if you get a 90 (or 85, blurry memory) on the regents, you fulfill the requirement.

If you haven’t completed the requirement prior to entering and you want to focus your studies entirely upon completing it, your best bet is to take an intensive foreign language class over either summer session I or II. This would be a 6 credit class, so you would be half time if you went one session, or full time if you went two sessions and took at least another 6 credits. Thus, your financial aid would cover everything as it would normally and you would still be able to focus on the language entirely for a time being. Also, summer courses tend to be easier than their normal session counterparts.

By intensive do you mean I would need to take a intermediate class and not 112 class. Thanks a lot for the help, I’ll probably do that I need all of the help I can get

Thanks Keleso for referencing that for him, I was too lazy to do it myself. I just remember a Stony Admission officer telling me that when I visited.

If you don’t waive the requirement through high school coursework, then it’s a second-level course. The 112-level would work.
