Is there a foreign language requirement for graduation? My son has totaken 4 years of Spanish in high school, and would like to avoid a foreign language in college, if possible.

All BA degrees have a “12th credit level” requirement attached. If you never had a foreign language, that would mean starting at Language You Choose 101 (4 credits) and working up through LYC 301 (which would total 12 credits). If you had some of LYC in high school, you might start at 201 and then take 301. If you had lots, you might test right out of 301 and that’s how YOU attain the “12th credit”. There are also requirements about where you have to start if you had a language in high school — they won’t let you start at 101 if you had 4 years in high school of that language, no matter how poorly it went. Yes, it’s fairly confusing There is no degree requirement for language for BS as a general rule, although some majors may have one as a major requirement within the BS.

I met with an adviser a week or so ago and she gave me a specific checklist for my major, biology. The form doesn’t have any language requirements, so for some majors you do not need to take a language at all.

I took Spanish 4 my junior year in high school and dropped it my senior year! I am in the College of Liberal Arts and I had to start out in SPAN 003 which is probably what he will have to start at. There is SPAN 001, SPAN 002, and SPAN 003 and each are four credits. I tried to worm my way into SPAN 002 but people at FTCAP wouldn’t let me. Don’t worry though, it is not very hard. I hated Spanish and loved SPAN 003 and was hoping to just get a C in the class so that I could just get through my requirement. I ended up getting an A in the class and now I am in SPAN 100 just because! But like greenbutton said above all B.A. degrees have a 12-credit language requirement.

So, it sounds like for a BA you need 3 semesters of a language.

Maybe he can pass the Spanish AP exam. A score of only 3 would get him 12 credits of foreign language.

I also know that you can take SPAN XXX and a second one where the first is Spanish 1 and half of 2 and then second is other half and 3! The nice thing about this is that it is like 6 credits so if you do well your boosts your GPA but it is everyday. I know friends who have loved this! But language was something I was stressing about coming in too and it really isn’t that bad! I promise ;)
