Foreign Language Requirement

Foreign Language was a disaster for my daughter but we tutored her through 2 years in high school. However, the emotional cost was so high that we knew she could never take language in college and she started only looking at colleges that did not require a foreign language. In the end she chose a school that does have a foreign language requirement but prior to accepting that school we spoke to the Accommodations Administrator, read him some passages from her 504 report (on his request), and then faxed the report over to him. He feels very strongly that she will be exempt from the foreign language requirement, she’ll still have to take their cultural requirement which she has no problem with but not the foreign language requirement.

This long story is to suggest you look at some of the colleges your son might be interested in (the two books suggested I would also recommend) and contact them about their requirements for admissions. With a 504 you’d be surprised at the flexibility a school will have. You are looking for the right school for your son, which I’m thinking is a small LAC that is personalized and nurturing with a lot of flexibility including design your own major/class and very interdisciplinary. This will take a bit more research than the top 50 colleges you could probably list right now but in the end you will all be so happy you did.

Good luck!

And not only that, it is very reasonably priced - around $12,500 for OOS tuition and fees.
Also, re Alice Lloyd - my H went there his freshman year. It’s a “work-study” school like Berea where every student has an on-campus job in lieu of tuition. It skews heavily toward first-gen students from Appalachia (which H was) and it’s tucked away in a Kentucky “holler” in the back of beyond. A good school but definitely not for everybody
