I'm a junior and I plan on going to Penn or Harvard. I'm currently signed up for Honors Spanish 4, which I think is a waste of space. I already know all the grammar required for proficient Spanish. Would it look good if I only had two years of high school Spanish and I pick up another language? I'm thinking about going directly into German 2 and then having German 3 senior year, my school only offers three languages and German is apparently the most difficult. I also plan on taking the SAT subject test for Spanish and the AP Spanish test next year, while I self study more Spanish vocab this year. Also, going to take the SAT German subject test and AP German exam. Would I still stand a chance if instead of taking four years of one language, I take two years of two different languages?

Either demonstrate proficiency in Spanish AND German or just proficiency in one of them, but do NOT dabble in both just to show you know a little bit of each (which I don’t think you’re doing)

Harvard says:
“Many secondary school students take a smattering of several languages – for example, Latin for two years, French for a year, and Spanish for a year. When it is too late, they realize that they cannot read or speak any of these languages well. We urge you to try to study at least one foreign language and its literature for four years.”
