Foreign Language Requirement

My son started taking Spanish in Junior High. His first year of Spanish in High School was deemed Spanish 3. (Essentially his three years of Spanish in Jr. High were considered two years at the HS level.) He finished with Spanish 5 in his Junior Year, then moved on to another language rather than pursuing Spanish 6. It would seem that he has filled his foreign language requirement at W&M, but I would appreciate having this confirmed.

In sum, we are wondering whether he must literally take four years of the same language while in HS itself, even if he came into HS with prior credit. Thank you for any insight!

If he took Spanish in Jr. High, then in 9th, 10th, and 11th grade, that would mean he took at least 4 years of Spanish. I don’t see what the confusion is. However, a quick call to the admissions office would answer your question :)

Here is the wording from the W&M website:

All William and Mary students are required to demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language before they graduate. Completion of this requirement may be accomplished in the following ways:
Completion of Level IV in high school of an ancient or modern foreign language

So he has completed the 5th level- so he has met the requirement.

The reason I was was looking for confirmation was because, underneath the statement that tjmom refers to, it says: “Unless you have completed 4 years of a language in high school…you need to complete your language course…here at the College…”

Presumably competency through level iv meets the standard, but I could see that some colleges may not look kindly on credits acquired through junior high work (perhaps depending on the high or low standards/reputation of that school district). So I was just checking out of an abundance of caution.

it doesn’t matter what anonymous people’s opinions on a school’s policy is. Only the school can confirm what is permissible.

If you’ve completed the fourth level of a single foreign language (Spanish 4, French 4, German 4, Latin 4, etc.) you have met W&M’s foreign language proficiency. This holds true even if some of those years were completed prior to high school. As long as your high school transcripts shows the fourth level and that the student passed you’re good to go.

Thank you, Admissions!

it’s 4 years of high school credit

just like if you take algebra before high school, it counts in your math sequence for high school.

Does the feshman still have to take the CWM placement test for that language, or is the pass on his high school transcript enough to get the foreign language exemption?

@SingaporeDon, if a student passed the fourth level of a single foreign language they do not take a placement test. They will simply automatically be granted completion of our requirement over the summer when the Registrar reviews their final high school transcript. If they wish to continue with that particular language at W&M they will simply enroll in the next level course.
