Hello all,
I had a quick question about foreign language. I took Spanish 2 as a freshman and Spanish 3 as a sophomore. I am a rising senior, and I see that colleges require two years in high school (done) but many competitive colleges recommend three. My school doesn’t offer Spanish IV or AP Spanish: Should I go out of my way to pursue another year of foreign language at a local university of high school (which will be hard to do) or is it justifiable that since my school didn’t offer it, I couldn’t do it, and pursued something else instead?
Thanks!
Most colleges view completion of level 3 as “3 years”.
That your high school offers no higher level means that completing only level 3 is less of a penalty for you than for students who choose to stop at level 3 when level 4+ is available. But if you really want to learn more Spanish, you certainly can continue with college courses in Spanish while in high school if scheduling and such can be made to work.
You are fine by completing Spanish 3. You will not be penalized by not having additional year even the college recommend/require >3 years in world language as your HS does not offer that. Nevertheless, many colleges have a world language graduation requirement that having a higher level of Spanish before entering college may help you down the road, particularly with AP credits.
