The language requirement varies based on how you place through AP exams/SAT II. Students who begin studying the language at Duke must take at least 3 courses, but other students who already have experience can only take 1.

I'm an incoming freshman who has taken AP Spanish Lang. (5 on exam) junior year, AP Span. Lit this year, and scored high enough on the SAT II to place into a 100-level course (so I only need to take one such course to complete the language requirement). Should I take Spanish in the fall semester to avoid 'getting rusty' before taking a harder Spanish class, or would it be OK to wait until later? Thanks for the help!

I know this isn't the type of answer you're looking for, but it really depends on your grasp of the language and the class you want to take. If you're asking if you should take a lower-level Spanish class (i.e. 76), then I'd say no.

thanks for the answer... pretty much, the AP scores/SAT II score forces me to take a 100-level class, not a lower-level class... The 100-level classes probably require a firm grasp of the language (they're classes like Advanced Writing, Literature, etc.), and I'm worried I may get rusty if I put off taking Spanish again until spring semester or later. On the other hand, taking Spanish in the fall semester would prevent me from taking other classes in which I'm more interested.
