A friend of mine toured UF over spring break and an admissions counselor told her they really didn’t care if the kids took 2 or 3 years of Spanish. Is this true? I thought 3 years was what UF looked for. My daughter would love to stop at Spanish 2.
I’ve always been told by my counselors that 2 was the requirement.
Yes that is the minimum requirement, but I was always told that UF preferred to see 3 yrs.
Personally, I got into UF having only taken 2 years and so have all of my friends (around 10 of us) so I’m not entirely sure if it makes a big difference or not. I did however take the SAT subject test in Spanish and scored a perfect score, but I doubt it made a difference though.
I think both of my kids got in with just 2. I think when UF see two, it’s a check in the box and they move on.
Then, they look at your overall course/class rigor, and they would weight advance 3rd year languages high (as well as other AP/AICE/IB/DE classes). So a 3rd year could help, but not because UF is looking for 3 years of language, but because that 3rd year is usually an honors or advance class.
For anyone following along I heard back from UF and FSU and both said Spanish 3 is not necessary considering that she is taking 5 AP/AICE next year. Both said 2 years will be fine.
2 years is all they require.
I know that. But I had a couple college planners tell me that they require 2 but prefer to see 3
A lot of competitive private colleges do like to see 3. I think the college planners are confusing those with UF. It’s likely what they recommend for any “competitive holistic” college.
@Jenwyman30 2 is minimum required…of course any school would prefer 3 or 4 to show rigor but only 2 is needed.
