Hi, I’m a current high school student looking to major in animation in the future. I’m surely set in at the very least the art major (if animation falls through) and dont intend to move to anything else that isn’t drawing. So, with that, here’s my question: is It entirely necessary that I take two years of a foreign language in order to apply for colleges in the future?
Looking at websites and admission requirements for art colleges I have my eyes on, most of their requirements on foreign language are either vague or not there at all (the latter being the more common case). I don’t intend on applying for any liberal arts schools in the future. I know that most high schools require a language, but my school made the course optional, so what is my best option? Should I crunch in the elective? I really want to get in as many art classes as I possibly can in order to prepare for college, so if I could cut out the foreign language, that would be stellar.
Many colleges do require 2 - 4 years of foreign language. IMO it would be prudent to take foreign language so you leave as many options open to you down the road as possible including applying to well-rounded colleges with excellent art departments. As one example USC, which has a fine animation department recommends 3 years and requires 2 years of foreign language.
Lots of colleges, including state universities, expect frosh applicants to complete foreign language up to level 2 or 3 or 4. If you do not take any at all, you could be significantly limiting you college choices later.
