How tough is it to get out of all or some of the foreign language requirement? Can a 4 or a 5 on a language AP get you out of it? Can studying abroad for a semester get you out of it? If so, can you fulfill the language requirement by going on ANY study abroad? I'm confused, and I can't stand foreign language and love Dartmouth and want to go (if I get in when I apply next year), but I don't love those 3 classes of language they make you take. Help, please?

Yeah, you can get out of the language requirement with a 4 or 5 on an AP language (or foreign literature) exam. However, I think you have to actually take a few of those language classes before getting to go on a study abroad trip.

here are some threads that can answer your questions:

Ok, yeah, this helps a lot, thanks. I'm gonna shoot for a 4 on the Spanish Language AP, and if I get in and come to Dartmouth, then I'll be fine. This info you gave me really helps.

Oh, and btw, is it possible to get out of the writing requirement with a 4 or 5 on AP English Language? I've been look all over the Dartmouth website and can't find that info.

A 5 on either English AP exam combined with a certain SAT score will get you out of writing 5, but everyone has to take a freshman seminar.

Can't help you out AP-wise (my hs had only 2 AP classes), but I took five terms of German and was placed into German 3 (the last class needed to fulfill the req). I'm not exactly fluent, so if you don't have APs for your foreign language, just take the placement tests during orientation and see what happens...

This may help too http://www.dartmouth.edu/~frstyear/work/policies/apexams.html

I'm terrible at learning foreign languages, and I want to be an econ major and work as an investment banker in New York. In light of the fact that I'm neither academically inclined or interested in learning a language, are there certain languages at Dartmouth where the curriculum is easier, or for whatever reason, it's easier to get an A in? I honestly just want to get the req out of the way, and I'm thinking about starting with a basic language class, because even if i can skip one or two with the placement test, I know that I suck at languages and don't want to get screwed in a class that A) I'm bad at and B) I'm not interested in so I won't be inclined to work too hard at.

ditto----any advice?
