Foreign Language Requirement

On the stanford website, they highly recommend some courses and the only requirement that I do not fulfill is the foreign language one. I took french for 4 years but those four years included taking french in middle school, I took only two years of french in middle school. i decided it was more important for me to take courses in subjects i really liked rather than focusing on a subject i had no interest in . I took 5 years in math, taking all of the courses offered, and have taken nine years of science, taking every course offered except for AP Ennviornmental science. Will not taking French for three years affect my admissions decision?

Will your middle school French courses show up on your transcript? If not, you can just mention it in the additional info. You have taken more than three years -- it just might not end up on the transcript. Plus, following your passion/interest is more important.

Are the two years in middle school equivalent to 2 high school years? At my school, two yrs of foreign language in middle school is just equivalent to one level in high school.

Also, is it clear from the name of your course that you're at a higher level? If you took a class called French IV or something, I'm pretty sure that you don't need to explain it more.

I have the same problem. I also took 2 years of foreign language in middle school and 2 in high school. My 2 years in middle school equals 2 high school foreign language credits and will show up on my transcript. The highest level I took was spanish 5, but will stanford look at the courses I took in middle school? because if not, I also won't meet the "requirements" for foreign language
