i am sooo

actually it wasn't - I was lying :p

My mom loathes CC because she thinks I spend too much time obsessing over college anyway and that this site is not helping matters :D

I'm going to take both Spanish and Mandarin at pton... am I suicidal?

From what I hear, Mandarin is quite difficult to learn, although Princeton is known as having an exceptional Chinese department and language-instruction faculty in Chinese. I speak Spanish, however, and think everyone in the U.S. should know it. If you're talking about starting both languages from a blank slate, I think you might be slightly overwhelmed, as you'd have to take both CHI 102 and SPA 102 in the Spring, giving you little leeway in course selection. Furthermore, many language departments require that you take 102 in order to get credit for 101. On balance, I think taking only one language freshman year would be a good idea, although two is doable.

hhhmm....

this is good. I scored well on standardized tests, but I would like to learn a new language

how is the arabic department?

zant, I don't know but you might get PWNED. :O

zante, do you have background in either of this languages? i soooo much want to learn both as well...but have 0 knowledge about it :(

maybe it's possible to take these as a credit-fail-pass? I'm pretty sure it'd be manageable then (considering your enthusiasm : ) ) if you weren't worried about making a 4.0...

thx mea...i think with the new grade capping and once i get the grade back from writing seminar (which is supposed to be stingy in giving out A) i wont be worried bout 4.0 at all :)

haha, i'll probably be like 'a B+! praise be!!'
eh well we'll be fine : ).

I've been taking Spanish for the past four years and I'm fairly fluent. Next year, however, I'm going to take Mandarin. I hope it isn't too difficult...

i really wanna go for arabic and im also interested in the near eastern studies program. any1 know how tough it is to learn arabic?

I do! I do!

I took Arabic 1st semester this year at the U of MN. I didn't take it second semester because I took it pass/fail 1st sem and consequently didn't study at all and consequently almost failed my pass fail class. Oops.

If you have the time to study it, it's not that bad. You'll spend a good chunk of the beginning of the semester learning the alphabet, which honestly isn't that hard. Pronounciation is difficult, and it's harder to BS your way throuhg it that with German or French or Spanish, since the words look /nothing/ like the English.

I'm definitely taking it at Princeton, though, esp. since I got to keep my textbooks for CHEAP with all the answers already, yesssssss.

Here's my question: Ok, so I am (or was) almost fluent in German. I'm guessing I'll test into 107, since I haven't done anything with it for a good 2 years. I also want to get fluent in Arabic and have a good grasp of Russian before I graduate. So, my plan was originally do German 107 1st semester and do Arabic 101 2nd semester, but they don't start it halfway through the year. I'm also planning on doing 4 classes 1st sem and 5 second sem. And 1 math class and 1 fresh sem each sem. SO anyway, my question is, is it bat**** crazy of me to take 2 languages my first semester? My schedule would look like this:

Arabic 101
German 107
Math 215
Freshman Seminar

(this is assuming i get Writing Seminar 2nd semester).

Is that crazy? Am I setting myself up to not graduating on time by doing that? I don't want to wait until Sophomore year to start Arabic, but I really want to get the German out of the way.

It'll be a difficult since they're totally unrelated languages, but I don't think it's impossible. It depends on how much of a language nut you are (personally, I think your scheddy is a dream one, minus math of course :p). I know a girl there now who took Spanish and Italian first semester, and next fall she'll be taking Spanish, French, and Italian. So yeah, people do multiple languages, but they're usually at least somewhat similar. Best of luck with that. And be sure to teach me what you've learned when you have the chance ;)

I would definitely never do Arabic and Russian at the same time. But since German I have had 5 years of school + 5 years of summer camp, I'm assuming that class will be moderately easy, plus the fact that I've already taken 1st semester Arabic and so will have done a majority of the coursework already (they use the same texts), makes it seem like both of them are only almost 1/2 a class so by together they are 1 class. Another reason why I don't want to save German until 2nd semester, because then I won't know what's going on in Arabic so it will be harder.

Yeah, do German and Arabic, then you could start taking Russian once you have a good grasp of your German. Sounds fun. What are you planning to major in?

Math. Aren't all those languages useful? ;)

(Actually they are; German and Russian for grad school and Arabic for my (hopefully) future job)

I'm confused... on the courses form it says "what science will you take in fall?". Does this mean that we have to take a science course in the fall if we're an A.B. candidate?

I think you can take the science anytime before junior year.

About learning 2+ languages - do you think it will be confusing to continue a language you're fluent in whilst starting a completely new one? (Like prettyfish doing German and Russian at the same time)

You can take your science requirements anytime before you graduate. Just as long as you graduate with two ST units, you'll be okay.

Yeah, you can take the ST's at any time, although they strongly encourage you to do them earlier rather than later.
