Foreign Language Requirement

If you don't place out with the AP or the SATII, how many semesters of language do you have to take? Do you have to make it to a certain level of proficiency (so if you'd already been studying a language, you'd take less than someone who was starting a new language) or is it a set number of semesters? Thanks!

It's level of proficiency. You have to complete the third-semester level course. You take a test on the Net before you arrive and get placed. Or, if you start a new language, you can take an intensive (double) course and progress faster.

Ohh! Thanks! Ok, so basically, you take the test and then they decide what level to put you in (1, 2, 3) and you have to complete semester-level 3? So if I was placed in 1, I'd take 3 semesters, placed in 2, I'd take 2 semesters, etc?

For foreign languages at Princeton, you generally must reach level 107/108. That is how they define "proficiency". So yes, it doesn't matter how you get there, or how many semesters you take - as long as you successfully complete level 107 or higher, then you are proficient in that foreign language.

*The languages usually follow this sequence:

101 (Level 1)
105 (Level 2)
107 (Level 3)

and the courses in between (eg. 102, 103) are either summer courses abroad or special intensive courses.

a friend at Princeton told me that the Language requirment is waived for international students. Is it true? Even if i don't speak any of the languages taught at Princeton?

Thanks, gianievve!

bump.... so, is the Foreign Language requirement waived for intl students? Regardless of Country of origin and language spoken?

i think foreign language requirement is waived for students who are already fluent in a foreign language

also, the lang requirement does not apply to BSE students

Wow, seriously? The language requirement doesn't even APPLY to BSE students?! Good thing I didn't take the Spanish SATII like I was planning to, haha
