Foreign Language Requirement

Are we allowed to pick any foreign language we want or does it have to be either German, Spanish, or Latin to count as one of those language requirements? Also, how many years of language do we need to take?

I don’t remember the specific pages but I believe:

You can chose any foreign language.

You need 3 for BAs, 4 for some BSes.

Check your major sheet: [Fall 2006 and Later Worksheets: Making Connections Curriculum — UNC Advising](http://advising.unc.edu/new-curriculum-worksheets)

i think you mean the opposite–3 for BS, 4 for some BA

It may be just some degrees… I think that a BS in math requires 4 years.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe your primary major determines whether you earn a BA or BS and you follow the foreign language requirements for the primary major.

Ive always heard 3 for BA and 4 for some BS… I was a chem BS and needed 4 before I became a Poli/Reli BA and I only need 3

So if I took Latin for 3 years in high school and doesn’t want to take Latin in college, do I still have to take the test at CTOPS? I want to take Japanese or Chinese, btw.

Oh yeah and what does HSFL stand for?

maybe high school foreign language?

i guess that’s right (i wouldn’t really know because one of my majors is french anyway & i placed out of those prereqs), but i don’t really understand why a non-humanities concentration would require more foreign language than a bachelor of arts?

I believe it is suggested to take the Latin placement test and then register for Japanese or Chinese.

I realized today I didn’t need to take Intermediate Spanish II, so I’m dropping it.

Hey guys, just so you know:

You have to take 3 of the SAME language. There’s no Hindi 101, French 101, Russian 101 option (as nice as that would be, they want you get to really good at one language rather than introduced to 3)

I do believe that If you get placed up for your high school language and chose another one, you have to take 3 semesters of it. They’ll explain all the details at CTOPS, don’t worry.

Ok the Latin professor said that I didn’t have to take the Latin placement exam if I had no interest in taking Latin in college. FYI for those that needed it.
