foreign language requirement.

I took 3 years of Chinese in Highschool, and passed the regents with an 85+. That was it.

For the foreign language requirement, I can either take 1 year of Chinese/some other language, 1 semester of intermediate, or 2nd semester of another language.

The problem is, I want to finish language freshmen year. I barely remember ANY chinese from high school, and I'm afraid of the difficulty at bing. I emailed the professor and she told me to take intermediate and if thats too hard, then go back to Chinese101. She said Chinese101 is harder than highschool chinese and I had a hard time in highschool. I even had my mom to help me then. At bing, I won't really have anyone besides the professors during office hours.

Now, I'm thinking of choosing Spanish and taking a year of that. I have never learned spanish before. How hard is Spanish at bing? What should I do?

Thanks

I don’t know anything about Chinese or Spanish at Binghamton. However, I took french throughout middle school and high school and was never very good at it. I took French II at Binghamton my first semester and found it very easy.

Is French II in the 200s level?

For my foreign language requirement, I had the same problem but with Hebrew. I took hebrew in hs up to the regents then stopped. I actually chose to take American Sign Language at Nassau Community (levels 1 and 2) to fulfill the req. It transfered over with no problem. Maybe you can find something like that.

No, it’s French 115.

I thought you would have fulfilled your requirement for a foreign language if you scored an 85+ on your regents.

Nope. You need to have 4 years of language which would be one year more than the regents.

I took 3years of Spanish in highschool and got 85+ on regents. I stopped at that.
Can I take the first two semesters of Spanish at bing to fulfill the requirement? Or does it have to be a different language?

All you would need is the intermediate level of spanish which is probably only one semester’s worth of class (this varies by language as some have more classes to progress from one level to the next). If you wanted to take a completely different language, you would have to take a beginner and intermediate level in college (so 2 semesters).

An example from my post above: I took Hebrew in HS for 3 years and got an 85+ on the regents as well. Instead of taking the intermediate level of Hebrew, which would have been one semester’s worth of class, I took American Sign Language for 2 semesters at a local community college (levels 1 and 2).

so does that mean I can take spanish level1 and2 to fulfill the requirement? I don’t want to take another language. And I don’t want to risk my gpa by taking the 3rdlevel.

As long as you complete the intermediate level of spanish (whether you take beginner level at bing or you jump right into the 2nd level), you will fulfill the req.
