Foreign language requirements

Language requirement?
Ok so I really do not want to take AP Spanish V, and will have completed Spanish 4 at the end of this year. Elite schools requires 4 years of foreign language, but if I have progressed from Spanish 1 through 4, does that count?

It is the level you have reached, not the number of years completed in HS; if you have completed Spanish 4, then you have taken 4 years of a FL.

Go back and read the college websites and check if they say ‘recommend’ or ‘require’.

Ok BC, my first choice, says it recommends 4 units (which according to you I have completed). I know it “recommends”, but I have come to take that as an unofficial requirement, so I am trying to be precocious. Thank you!

I absolutely agree that when a selective college says recommend, it is best to have it. However it’s important to note the difference, because if you don’t have a requirement, then you might as well not apply, while not having a recommendation can sometimes be compensated for in another part of your application.

For additional input, use the Search function for ‘foreign language’ and you will find similar threads.

Just to be sure, you said that since I’ve gone through Spanish 4, even though I began in middle school, it counts as 4 units of foreign language?

Most colleges look at the level completed, but you can always ask the college to be sure.

But if you really don’t want to take it, I’d say don’t take it. Follow the heart, buddy.

My GC recommends that I take AP Spanish. Is it a make or break thing if I don’t?

You may want to check whether AP Spanish will help you with respect to graduation requirements at various universities.

If I were in your situation, I would take it. Not only do colleges like to see 4 years of foreign language in high school, they also like to see you challenge yourself in your senior year. That being said, if you feel strongly against it, im sure you could find other challenging classes that would look just as impressive.
