Foreign Language Requirements?

Hi,

I’m a freshman in Spanish 3 Honors; in sophomore year, I will be in AP Spanish (Lang). Is it OK to stop foreign language after AP Spanish, or do I have to take more classes? Harvard recommends 4 years of foreign language, and Stanford recommends 3 years. Can I be an exception to that?

Thank you so much!

AP level is considered 4-5 years of foreign language. Generally, colleges look at the level reached.

@guineagirl96 So…it’s okay to stop foreign language at AP Spanish?

yes, you can stop after taking AP

Agreed. When my S was thinking of stopping we checked with several admissions offices on whether “3 years of a language” meant he actually had to take 3 years or if reaching level 3 was sufficient. They all agreed reaching level 3 was enough.

Would it look better to take post-AP Spanish classes? My school offers two post-AP Spanish classes. Or, should I take another language after Spanish?

For admissions, it will make no difference. So the decision is based on what ties in bests with your interests. Personally, I’d opt for the post-AP class, since even with having completed AP, unless you are a heritage speaker, chances are you will still be far from proficient. But it’s your call.

Also if you are a prospective student-athlete you don’t need the 4 year language requirement for Harvard.

Are you taking Spanish to check off a box on your application or to actually learn/use the language?
Based on your answer, either take more spanish or do another elective, either academic or fun.
