Foreign Language Requirements

What do most colleges require in the way of foreign language requirements for graduation? DS is on block schedule at his high school. They have an agreement with the Univ. of Ala and have students taking a college level Japenese course at the high school. The students had to pay a large fee to take this course and an even larger one to receive college credit. He will not get the college credit because we could not afford the larger fee at the time. He instead took the class to get his language out of the way for HS.

He has a had a full year of Japenese and it might be considered 2 yrs because of the block scheduling. If languages are required he will probably choose Japenese when he gets to college. He was just wondering what the typical requirements are. His will probably major in Engineering or Mathmatics.

The colleges I looked at typically recommended 3 years of a foreign language.

Typically 2 to 3 years. In the case of some private more selective schools, they often recommend (as opposed to require) 4 years. I think 2 years is a pretty standard minimum for less selective state universities, though. (Some will let you waive that requirement as long as you enroll in foreign language as a freshman and complete 2 years there.)

For math and engineering students, maybe that requirement is less universal, but I don't know.
