Does anyone know about how to plan for how much foreign language you need to study abroad junior year? I thought USC web site said need to take 3 semesters of foreign language of the country you want to study abroad (prerequisite requirement).

USC requires 3 semesters of a foreign language. Programs that require 2-3 semesters don't need any more classes. Some programs require 4 or more semesters, so you take an extra semester or two for the study abroad requirement. Most people take one class/semester to satisfy the requirement, unless you place out of the language placement test and then the job becomes easier. One of the Russia programs requires 6 college-level semesters...I'm not sure how you could prepare for that one beyond placing out of tests and taking summer courses before junior year.

This is the website for the College's study abroad program. Pick a country that you are interested in, then look at its profile. Near the bottom there will be a section on language requirement that will tell you how many language courses you need. It varies by country.

Thank you for the info. What happens if you are interested in learning at a prestigious specialized foreign university (studying related to your major at USC) which is not on the list of approved schools at USC?

If you are in a school other than the college, there are other study abroad programs, so there may be options there. Otherwise, go into the study abroad office and ask them any questions about it. USC has approved of some alternate schools, but not necessarily the one you want. Some negotiation may need to happen.

Oh boy - now you have done it... just kidding. You now have to find out what your school's policies are. You might have to present your case formally or you just might need to have a chair sign off on it. In either case if you have the desire to order off of the menu make the most of it.
