Next semester, I’m forced to choose between continuing my foreign language (into its 6th semester) and my Organic Chemistry class at a local community college. I really enjoy the OChem class (it’s like the only class that’s actually challenging), but numerous people have told me that I shouldn’t drop my language.
In regard to both MIT’s admissions and the general college admissions process, would choosing one over the other cause any problems? Any recommendations or thoughts?
Do other schools your are applying to require 3 or more years of FL?
I think most of them recommend having 3+ years of a foreign language.
Then you should not drop FL. You will have chance to learn O Chem later.
In regards to MIT, their website explicitly states that they recommend 2 years of a foreign language. I would recommend that you take an interesting and challenging class over a 6th semester of foreign language.
Inapplications for schools that recommend 3 years of a foreign language mention that you only took two and a half years because it no longer fit in your schedule. As long as your schedule consists of challenging courses it shouldn’t be a big deal at all.
