Foreign Language

As I look around at colleges, I am seeing that most say to have 3 years of foreign language. I currently am going to have only two years of foreign language in order for me to take more AP classes. So would it be ok for me not to take that other year of foreign language. Also does it help if I will be taking the AP Chinese exam in the spring?

Three would definitely be better than two. Getting a 5 on the AP Chinese would really help your case, unless you are a native speaker, in which case it won’t carry so much weight.

This isn’t terribly important if you are already bi-lingual. 3 years is recommended not required and if you have something you’d rather study, that is more consistent with your personal goals, then do it. It’s not about jumping through hoops to prove that you can - it’s about showing them why you are a uniquely interesting candidate with a rigorous schedule whom they want at the school.

My son got into some very good schools with only 2 years of language (and he is not bilingual) one of those years was actually 8th grade.

Yes, foreign languages are the one area where recommendations and “requirements” can be interpreted loosely.

Thanks all for your answer! I was a bit worried about that but not so much now.
