Foreign Language

I'm applying EA to LSA, and am confused as to whether the foreign language requirement is very important. I have 1 year of high school language (sophomore year) under my belt, but my counselor said I need two. I got a 2220 SAT (670CR, 780M, 770W, 8Essay) and a 34 ACT (31E (32 superscore), 35M, 35R, 33S (35 superscore)). I want to pursue a more science-focused schedule. I want to take:

Psychology (Community College)
Calc 3 (Community College)
AP Chem
AP Physics
Logic (Community College)
Creative Writing (Community College), already finished AP Lit

I have 1 yr of arabic, but don't want to take it next year because it will:
a) lower my GPA (4.83 instead of 5.0), if I get a 5, I will prob be sal.
b) miss out on psych, which I want to take

So will admissions overlook it?

Bump plz

I would recommend listening to your counselor. Why give U-M a reason to defer you? No one on cc can tell you with assurance that the admissions counselor will overlook this. Your high school counselor may have a relationship with the admissions counselor and have some experience here. You can pick up the pysch at U-M. If you are admitted EA, the impact on the GPA will not matter.

I would encourage you, just as the other posters have, to take a second year of Arabic. Since the other posters have already covered what admissions might think, here’s something to think about if you decide to come here. Although I’m not sure about Arabic in particular, foreign language classes in general at UMich are notoriously difficult to get into before they close. I came into UM and placed out of my French language requirement with fourth-level proficiency due to all the work I did in high school - this freed up 16 credits I could use elsewhere, which allowed me to not overload myself up to the beginning of my junior year. There is a placement test for Arabic, so even if you’re not able to completely place out, any work you do in high school will certainly pay off once you get here.
