Foreign Language

I took Spanish 1-2 in middle school, but obviously that doesn't show up on my high school transcript. This year I took Spanish 3-4 and next year I'll be taking 5-6. I know that a lot of colleges, like the Ivies, look for 4 years of a foreign language. I don't know how far I'm supposed to continue with Spanish because I don't know if Spanish 1-2 in middle school counts as 1 year. How will colleges know that I took 1 year of Spanish in middle school or will they even know at all? I'm just worried because I'd really like to fit in another elective but Spanish is taking up that space and I'd like to finish as soon as possible.

“Four years of foreign language” can be interpreted as “finished the 4th full year of study.” It doesn’t matter how you get there.

Thanks for your clarification!! I appreciate it (especially since I was confused…)

Are you sure it doesn’t show on your transcript? Was it taken for high school credit? I took Spanish 1 in 7th grade and Spanish 2 in 8th and it shows on my transcript.

According to my middle school and high school, those two years of Spanish in middle school counted as a high school class but still didn’t show up on my transcript.

I kind of have the same question. Are you saying that if I take Chinese 5 freshman year and AP Chinese sophomore year, that would already be making the 3 year language requirements of most colleges even though I have only taken it for 2 years/credits in high school?

Honestly I have no idea… I’m so confused on how colleges know if you took a foreign language class in middle school that is supposed to count for those 3 or 4 years colleges look for…

They want you to have achieved a level of fluency equivalent to X years of high school study. If you got to the AP level, you’re good. If you took 3-4 semesters of community college foreign language at night / in the summer, you’re good. If you got to whatever your school calls 4th year foreign language as a freshman, you’re good.

Thanks so much! This resolves all my scheduling conflicts!

Thank you so much. I totally get it now!!
