I took french 1 as pass/no pass and registered for french 2 in spring. i have a 4.0 and i will be igetc certified. english major transfer, ucla or ucb.

BUT i just found out i might not pass french 1, which means i would have to take french 1 in spring, which means not having the 2 semesters of french needed (in combination with foreign english classes i've already taken) as major prereqs for ucla.

will i be denied because of this? even with strong EC's and 4.0 (well, not 4.0 after not passing french, but...)

Foreign language completion is not a requirement for admission, although like anything it makes you more competitive. You can file partial IGETC completion, retake 1 now, and then finish at the UC, if accepted.(Unless the language is part of the major requirement.)

You sound borderline. Go speak with or email the prof. Tell him you enjoyed his class and are looking forward to F2 and hope there is a way to fix this with extra credit or something. If you worked hard, tell him you thought you were working hard but things just spiraled downward. If you slacked off, be honest. Tell him you realize there were some mistakes you made. You didn’t realize the cumulative effect. Tell him you have an extra study resource going forward. Really try to get the passssss.

Being as you’re 4.0 it probably won’t effect your admission but who knows?

@calbound007 Sorry to hear that. I hope it works out. Good luck.

There is one other option.

Language is a validation course, meaning you can go into the level you test in to, regardless of whether you took an earlier class or not, or whether you flunked it, or whatever. Why not see about the possibility of taking a language test to place you into french 2? Go ask your advisor. It would have to be done ASAP, if allowed…

You might not need French 1 if French 2 satisfies the requirement for transfer.
French 1 might not be a hard pre-req for French 2 i.e. the prof might be able to waive it.
So you might still be able to take french 2… although having a NP on French 1 on your application during the time of transfer will probably hurt hard.

bomerr, so you mean if i can still take french 2 and pass it, it could satisfy the major prereq for the two semesters of a foreign language? i thought cc’s disallowed you to register for a 2nd semester language if you failed the first?

depends on the college. I’ve taken 2nd semester and 4th semester foreign language without taking 1st or 3rd. (not that I would recommend doing that lol)

French 1 is basically a pre-requisite. All they care about is that second course. My daughter also suggested if it’s the same professor for 2, ask if you can make up any deficiency (extra credit) during part 2. You never know…

@bomerr how did you get into 4 without 3? They just let you?

interesting. i’d hate to take it only to find out a couple weeks into that i’ll be dropped for not passing 1. i’ve heard of this happening for those in other classes. thanks for your help.

My calc professor straight up told us that we would be dropped in calc 2 if we did not complete 1 (got lower than a C) because the sign-up date for calc 2 was before we finished calc 1.

For foreign language I didn’t have that problem although I did take foreign language at a different college.

@lindyk8
First I sat in class and spoke with the professor.
I got the textbook for the entire year.
Then I had to get department approval.
Only after I showed them that I completed all the prior homework would they allow me to enroll.

@calbound007 not sure if this would be an option, but Berkeley says this: “Self-paced courses may be used to fulfill Foreign Language, provided they are equal in unit value to the non-self-paced classes approved for the requirement.” Is there a way to take a self-paced online that you can do in three weeks?

i dont think there’s a self paced option in the los angeles cc district. thank you again for the help. i wrote the profesor a letter explaining my situation. we’ll see what happens, grades should be posted soon.

i’ll die if i have to wait an entire additional year because of one stupid class, especially considering i have a 4.0. i’ve never even gotten a B and yet i could lose admission because one professor screwed me. she was terrible by the way, this is not my fault. i have the grades and study habits to prove it. :(

Ah, so a snotty teacher. It really is creepy if she won’t help you when you have a 4.0 and have applied to UCLA. I would complain somewhere. Really, you can challenge these things. I would go to the district office.

On the bright side, maybe you can enroll in F2 either at your CCC with another prof or at another district CCC. Once you’re in, you’re in. That part I do know is true. As bomerr said, the F1 is merely the means to the end to get into F2. It’s not part of IGETC or your major req. I would reach out to another professor now. If she’s a creep, they will most likely already know it.

At UCLA, a foreign language is required for the English major reqs.

Did you take and pass at least 2 years of French in HS? If so, this also satisfies the prereq to be able to register for French 2. Your CC would need your HS transcripts.

Thanks. The problem now is, how the heck am I going to get through French 2! I worked real hard in French 1, but really struggled. I need to take Franch 2 as a letter grade in Spring, so if I’m accepted to UCLA or Cal, they will want at least a B I’m sure, and that is a tall order for me in French 2.

Try the app duolingo as an adjunct. Although I suspect you can slide by with a C spring term. Can’t say for sure but usually that’s the case. Also there must be some language tutors there, right?
