I have already taken 2 years of spanish but I have conflicts for 3rd year spanish. The conflict is with advanced dance, which I was really excited to take. I used to dance outside of school but I haven’t been lately due to injury- I am not quite as obsessed with it now but I still love dancing. My school keeps the schedule the same from year to year so I will have the same problem senior year.
Most of the schools I am applying to only require 2 years of language, a couple of them don’t have specific requirements but recommend 3. How much will it hurt me if I only have 2? I really, really wanted to take the dance class and on the contrary, spanish at my school was a pretty horrible experience for me.
Take dance and your counselor can explain the scheduling conflicts in his/her letter of rec
Can you take an online Spanish class to get that 3rd yr credit?
@citymama9 the school policy is that you can’t take classes online/ at a community college unless the class isn’t offered. Since this class is offered at the school, I don’t think I can, but I guess it’s worth asking.
It is worth asking as they may make an exception in the event of a conflict.
And you can always take a class online or at a CC – if the HS won’t put it on your transcript you can send it to the college separately. For example, you can indicate that you are taking a class at a CC on your applications and have the CC send the transcript directly to the colleges you apply to. You can ask your guidance counselor about this as well.
“the school policy is that you can’t take classes online/ at a community college unless the class isn’t offered. Since this class is offered at the school, I don’t think I can, …”
You should take the courses that you think are most meaningful for you. That appears to be dance. As far as Spanish is concerned, do you want to learn Spanish? If so, I am sure that the school policy does not prohibit you from taking on line classes or taking a course at a community college. One of the greatest things about current technology is that it allows most people to learn about anything they want and nobody can interfere with that. So if you want to learn Spanish, find a way.
Or, do you mean you only want to learn it if you “get credit”. That’s a different story. But if it is meaningful to you to learn, credit should make no difference.
@lostaccount well, all the online programs and college classes I’ve looked at require you to get a signature from a school admin, so they can prevent me. And I know they have prevented people from doing it before, but I don’t know what their reason was. They might act differently if I presented with a better reason than the others.
Prepare your points carefully. Indicate that you’ve danced for a long time outside of school and you’ve looked forward to taking this class ever since you knew you could take it as a junior. You’re going to apply to selective 4-year colleges that want 3 years of foreign language, and Spanish 3 is at the same time as dance, so would they allow you to take Spanish online and count it as your Level 3 credit? Volunteer to bring copies of your assignements and grades to the Spanish teacher.
Is it possible to take the class over the summer, even if it is online or at a CC? Unless you need a signature from your HS to enroll I don’t see how they can really stop you from taking a class over the summer or during the year.
