I’m a rising senior who has taken 3 years of French (1, 2, Honors 3) and gotten straight A’s. I hate French and I don’t want to take anymore - instead I’m planning to take high-level history and politics courses, plus AP Stats and AP Psych. (Intended major is polysci) Is it better to showcase my interests and study what I like, or is it basically required to have another year of French?
As far as foreign language goes, it depends on the schools you are interested in applying to, If you know what schools you are interested in you could look up what is required for Polysci majors. Sometimes level 3 is enough to get admitted but the degree program may require level 4 to graduate from the college. Which means you may need to take 1-2 semesters of French (or 4 semesters of a whole new language).
@MerryLee are there any specific admissions requirements that say how many years are required? could I just enter a program and take another year of French in college, not senior year?
Each college’s admission page will list what they require or recommend.
You can also look at the college’s graduation requirements to see if it has a foreign language graduation requirement that is greater than the admission requirement.
Go onto the websites of the schools you hope to attend. It doesn’t hurt to look at the websites :)>-
Then look at the admissions requirements for new freshman and check the foreign language requirements. Some schools “recommend” 4 years. If that’s the case, you need to be aware that they will receive applications from other students who will have met the recommendation.
It’s on you to check. I’m being MamaBear now: no one on CC is going to look up your schools for you and tell you what each school requires since this is something that is an individual thing and each school is different. If you’re not ready to investigate this information, independently, then you may want to wait on applying to 4 yr colleges until you feel confident enough to ask. You will be expected to do a lot of independent exploration in college.
@ucbalumnus thank you!!
